Chapter 175 Vincent was still under the effects of anesthesia, his body trapped in a deep, unconscious state. Despite this, his brow remained furrowed, as if even in his slumber, he was enduring an indescribable agony.

Ethan, after receiving emergency treatment, had also drifted into a deep sleep.

Brian watched as the medical staff wheeled both men into the hospital room, his mood overshadowed by a deep gloom.

It seemed that ever since Claire had disappeared, misfortune had been dogging those who had wronged her, one after the other.

Reflecting on how Claire wasn't the true culprit behind Irene's vegetative state, and remembering the hardships Claire had endured during her five years in prison, Brian's heart ached profoundly.

Was this karma? The harm they had inflicted on Claire had finally cback to haunt them.

Brian lingered outside the hospital room for a long tbefore dragging his heavy steps away. Initially, he intended to return to his own room. However, recalling Irene's earlier manic state, he couldn't shake off his unease. So, he turned around and entered Irene's room instead.

Irene was already lying on her bed, but she wasn't asleep. Since waking from her vegetative state, she had been reluctant to close her eyes, having missed out on five years of the world. She feared that if she closed them again, she might revert to her previous ghost-like existence.

When Brian entered, he saw Irene staring wide-eyed out the window.

"Irene," he called softly, but she didn't react at all.

With a sigh, Brian approached her, speaking gently, "Irene, your brother is here to see you. Aren't you happy?" Happy? A mocking smile played on Irene's lips. If he truly cared for her as a sister, he wouldn't defend Vanessa. Despite knowing how much she had suffered and how Claire had been dragged into five years of unjust imprisonment, he, as her own brother, seemed reluctant to pursue the truth.

He wasn't here to visit her; he was here to witness her humiliation.

One thing continued to puzzle Irene. Despite having been awake for several days, her parents hadn't visited her once. Before she was harmed, they had always doted on her. She couldn't believe that they wouldn't cto see her upon learning of her recovery. The only explanation was that they didn't know. This meant Brian hadn't informed them of her awakening.

He must have known that if their parents came, they would stop at nothing to uncover what really happened all those years ago. In order to protect Vanessa, he had gone to extrlengths.

Wasn't he the one who claimed not to like Vanessa? Wasn't he the one who had pursued Claire for three years during high school? Didn't he want to break off his engagement with Vanessa for Claire's sake? Yet when it ctfor Vanessa's misdeeds to be exposed, her dear brother was unwilling. He would rather deceive their parents, rather make her endure injustice, and let Claire continue to bear the false charge of attempted murder than let Vanessa suffer even a scratch.

How laughable. It was utterly laughable.

A person like him didn't deserve to be her brother. He certainly didn't deserve to say, "Your brother is here to see you. Aren't you happy?" Those words rang hollow and insincere to her.

Irene still refused to look at him; she only wished for her body to recover quickly.

Brian, seeing no response from Irene, felt his smile falter. Yet he forced himself to maintain.composure, speaking with a tone of helplessness, "Are you still mad at your brother?" Pausing, he continued, "I know what you're thinking, but I can't do what you want." "You are my dear sister. Everything I do is for you."

For her? Irene scoffed internally. Was making her suffer part of doing m things for her? Was leng was letting the true culprit go unpunished part of that too?

Before she woke, he had let Claire suffer for her sake. Now ke. Now that she was awake, why not put Vanessa behind bars for her? Did loving Claire mean hurting her? If she could move, she would have slapped him right then and there.
