Chapter 181 Alex's POV "Well, look at you two," my mother said finally, her voice smooth but there was a sharp edge I recognized. She wasn't looking ator Christiana, her attention solely on Ethan and Ema, who were grinning from ear to ear. She didn't even acknowledge Christiana, not once. It was like she wasn't even in the room. "You've done well," Madam Margret said to them. her tone almost soft, but I could see the coldness in her eyes.

I couldn't help myself. "You should've been here sooner,” I said, the words slipping out before 1 could stop them. I wasn't angry, not exactly. I just needed to say it. I needed her to understand how much of a mess everything had been.

Her gaze shifted tothen, but only for a moment. A single eyebrow raised as if she was deciding whether to challengeor ignore me. In the end, she did neither. She just turned back to the kids. “I'm sorry for not being here when you needed. me," she said, her voice softer now, but I could tell it was more out of obligation than sincerity. "I know this has been hard on all of you." Ethan, his face still full of the wonder only a kid could have, looked up at her with those big eyes. "Are you gonna stay now, Grandma?" I tensed, waiting for my mother's response. I didn't know what to expect. The usual excuses, the quick dismissal? But to my surprise, she crouched down to meet his gaze. "I wish I could, darling," she said, and there was something almost real in her voice. “But I'm afraid I have to go again soon. I've been terribly busy." I felt a rush of relief, even though it wasn't exactly a victory. The kids seemed to accept it, nodding with understanding, but I could see Christiana in the corner of my eye. She was still standing at the door, arms crossed, but her shoulders had lowered just a little. She wasn't quite so tense anymore.

"I'm sorry for what you've all been through," Madam Margret continued, giving both kids one last hug before standing up. There was a momentary softness in her expression, but it didn't last long. She always looked like she was ready to leave, like she couldn't be bothered to stay for long.

I wasn't sure what to say. I hadn't expected her to apologize, not really. But here she was, doing just that. It didn't change anything, though. Nothing could erase the years of distance and disconnection. My mother didn't know how to be here for us. Not really. But I could see her trying, in her own way.

Without a word, she turned and walked toward the door, her heels clicking sharply on the hardwood floor. She didn't look back as she left. She never did.

The air felt different once she was gone, though the silence was still heavy. Christiana wasn't looking at me. Her gaze was on the floor, and I could see the exhaustion in her shoulders, the weight of everything that had happened.

The kids were back to their pancakes, chattering away like nothing had happened. Ethan was already trying to convince Emma that he could eat more syrup, and Emma was laughing, asking for extra strawberries. I didn't know how to process the last few minutes. Part ofwas relieved that Madam Margret hadn't caused another scene, but I wasn't sure if that meant anything in the grand schof things.

I took a deep breath, glancing at Christiana. She was still quiet, still lost in her thoughts, and for a moment, I felt that familiar tug of frustration. She was always like this-pulling away, trying to protect herself. I didn't know what to do with that, how to fix it.

"Christiana," I said, my voice softer than I intended, but she didn't look up. I stepped closer, but I wasn't sure if she even knew I was there. "Are you okay?" She finally looked up at me, her eyes tired but steady. She didn't say anything right away, but there was something in the that madefeel like I didn't have to explain myself. way she held my gaze "I'm fine," she said, her voice calm but strained.

1/3 16:59 Tue, Dec 31 1 00 Chapter 181 I nodded, even though I didn't believe her. She never liked to talk about what was bothering her, especially when it cto things like this. But I also knew that pushing her wouldn't help. Not now, Instead, I turned back to the kids, watching as Ethan smeared syrup all over his pancakes, laughing at Emma's attempts to stack them higher. For a moment, everything seemed normal, like the chaos of the past few days had melted away. I wanted to hold onto that feeling, to keep the kids safe in this bubble where nothing could hurt them.

But I couldn't forget what had happened. I couldn't forget what we'd been through, what Christiana had been through And I knew, deep down, that it wasn't over yet. Not by a long shot.

"Con," I said, breaking the silence between us. “Let's finish breakfast” Christiana gavea small smile, and for the first tin what felt like forever, I thought maybe, just maybe, everything might be okay for a little while.

Watching Christiana, I knew she had a thousand thoughts racing through her mind. She hadn't spoken much since we left the dining room. I could see it in her eyes...the exhaustion, the weight of everything that had happened, and the tension in her shoulders. She hadn't let herself truly feel it yet, not fully. But I could tell it was all building up inside her.

We were in the room now, and I could hear her breathe, feel the space between us as thick as anything. She had a way of holding it all together, keeping her composure, but I knew that at spoint, it would crack. And when it did, I wanted to be there to catch it.

I stepped closer to her, taking in the way her hands fidgeted with her shirt, the way her eyes flickered nervously. She was still thinking about Daniel. I could tell. The idea of her having to undress for him, the tension of what she'd gone through to protect the kids...it had to be eating her up inside. And no matter how much I tried to convince myself it didn't bother me, it did.

"Christiana," I said softly, my voice low but firm, “You don't need to carry that around with you. What happened, it wasn't had to do." fault. You did what your you She didn't say anything right away, just stood there, her lips pressed tight together. Then, she looked at me, eyes clouded, as if the words hadn't hit her yet. And I couldn't stand seeing her like this.

I moved closer, brushing a lock of hair away from her face. "You don't have to keep it inside,” I said again, my hand resting on her shoulder. She didn't pull away, but I could feel the resistance. Still, I didn't back off. "Lettake care of you," I said, stepping even closer now, my hands gently pulling her toward me.

She didn't speak for a moment. Her breath caught as I lowered my lips to hers, slow and deliberate. She kissedback, but I could tell it wasn't just about the kiss. There was something more beneath it...something raw, something real. She needed this release. She needed to let go of the hurt, the worry, the fear. And I needed to be the one to help her do that.

I pulled her closer, my hands on her back, feeling the tension there, the tightness in her muscles. Her body responded instinctively to mine as I kissed her harder, deeper, trying to make her forget that wasn't right here, right now. I could feel her breath coming faster, her hands on my chest, pulling at my shirt. Without thinking, I lifted her up, her legs wrapping aroundas I carried her to the bed. She was light in my arms, but the weight of everything else...everything she had been holding, was heavier than I could carry alone. But I didn't mind. I would carry it for her.

I laid her down gently, hovering over her as I undressed her slowly, my hands caressing every inch of hen skin. She closed her eyes, her breath still heavy, but it wasn't fear anymore. There was a soft vulnerability in the way she lettake control, leterase everything else for just a moment.

I kissed her neck, her collarbone, moving lower until I could feel her The pulse quicken. She moaned softly as I traced the line of her body with my fingers. And then, it was like the rest of the world didn't exist. The tension, the fear, the past few days... it was all gone. 2/3 16:59 Tue, Dec Chapter 181 We made love together, each touch, each kiss building something between us. It was more than just physical it was everything we hadn't been able to say. Everything we hadn't been able to show each other until now.

When we finally cback to ourselves, I held her close, her head resting on my chest. We didn't speak, but we didn't need to. We both knew it was the release we needed. The silence between us wasn't uncomfortable. It was just us.
